Drivers must prepare vehicles before journey, warns Highways Agency
Published: 02/02/2012
The Highways Agency has called on drivers to ensure their vehicles are fully prepared for the elements before setting out on any journeys this month.
The call comes as average temperatures across the UK continue to fall, leading to increasingly difficult road conditions.
Highways Agency winter team member Jason Glasson called on drivers to stay vigilant of conditions noting that ice is a major risk to drivers in the UK.
The agency has a 500-strong gritting fleet ready to deal with any major problems but Mr Glasson believes drivers should prepare for any eventualities.
“Although the forecast suggests you are unlikely to need a snow shovel this week, you should make sure you have plenty of warm clothing for you and your passengers," he said.
"If you break down on the motorway it’s dangerous to stay in your vehicle."
The comments come after the Met Office issued a cold weather alert for the entire country with temperatures of minus three predicted in London and Birmingham this Friday (February 3rd).
"Give yourself extra time to prepare for your journey on a cold morning and don’t drive off until you and your car are ready,” Mr Glasson noted.
